CONNECTING FOR MENS HEALTH

MEN'S HEALTH WEEK 14 - 20 JUNE 2021 

International Men's Health Week is celebrated every year in the middle of June. In Australia, the dates for Men’s Health Week cover the 14th to 20th of June. Men’s Health Week is designed to provoke thought and discussion about what needs to be done to improve male health – and this requires an ‘all hands on deck’, collective effort (men, women…  everyone).

At LIVIN, we recognise the reality that EVERYONE can struggle with ‘health’ related issues; however, it’s hard to ignore that in Australia men’s health is generally poorer than women’s across a number of areas, and this certainly appears to be the case when looking at aspects of mental health. This is why for Men’s Health Week LIVIN will be shining a light on Men’s Mental Health and encouraging men that  #ITAINTWEAKTOSPEAK

The latest statistics show:

  • 76% of all suicides are men. That’s 7 every day in Australia, 1 every minute globally.

  • Approximately 50% of all men in Australia will experience mental ill-health at some stage in their lives.

  • 40% of men who seek help said they made up their own mind to do so. In the majority of cases, it is OTHER people who have encouraged men to reach out for support…this is why Men’s Health Week is such an important initiative for EVERYONE to engage in.

  • 1 in 5 Aussies (22%) haven’t seen a close mate in 6 months or more.

On a positive note, there has been a 10%+ increase in men seeking help in the last decade. Men do appear more willing to talk in recent times, but ensuring men find the right ‘fit’ for when they open up is vital.

Men's Health Week has a direct focus on the health impacts of men's and boy's environments. It serves to ask two questions:

  • What factors in men's and boy's environments contribute to the status of male health as indicated in the table above?
  • How can we turn that around and create positive environments in men's and boy's lives?

With these questions in mind, take inspiration from some of LIVIN's key ambassadors and bring greater awareness to Men’s Mental Health.
